An old man of Linzi had a daughter who was the wife of Li, a student of the Imperial Academy. Before she married, a fortune-teller cast her horoscope and declared that she was sure to suffer punishment at an official’s hands. The old man was angry with him. Then he laughed. “What wild talk! Never mind that a daughter of a good family will never stand in a court of law. Can’t an Academy student protect one wife?” Once married, she proved a fearful shrew. Pointing at her husband and cursing him was an everyday thing. Li could not bear her abuse, and in his anger took his complaint to the authorities. The county magistrate, Lord Shao, accepted the complaint and sent runners with a warrant to bring her in at once. When the old man heard, he was horrified. He led the young men of his family into the hall and begged the magistrate to let the matter drop. Shao refused. Li too regretted it and asked to withdraw. Shao said angrily, “Inside a court of law, do you think starting and stopping is all up to you? She must be brought in and tried!” When she arrived, he asked her a question or two, then said, “A real shrew!” He had her given thirty strokes of the rod, and the flesh of her buttocks came clean off.
