Cao Cao’s Tomb

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a drained, muddy riverbed, a magistrate in an official's hat bends forward with his hands behind his back to look at a small stone tablet standing in a dark cave mouth cut into the cliff; two laborers stand by, one leaning on a shovel and one shading his eyes with a coil of rope, and a timber sluice gate stands upstream.

Outside the city of Xu there was a river that ran swift and turbulent, deep and dark near the cliff. One midsummer a man went in to bathe, and suddenly, as if struck by knives and axes, he came floating up with his body cut apart. Another man after him met the same fate. Word passed from one to another, and people were alarmed and baffled. When the county magistrate heard of it, he sent a crowd of men to dam the river upstream and drain the water. Under the cliff they found a deep cave, and in it a turning wheel set with rows of sharp blades, bright as frost. They took away the wheel and broke their way in. There was a small stone tablet, all in Han-dynasty seal script. Looking closely, they found it was the tomb of Cao Mengde. They broke open the coffin and scattered the bones, and took all the gold and treasure buried with him.
