Old Master Zhang

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a rocky ledge halfway up a mountain above a wide river in daylight, a smith works a bellows beside a brick furnace, two workmen in headcloths swing a glowing lump of iron on long tongs toward the cliff edge, and a bearded scholar in a square cap and long gown stands on the brink pointing out over the empty river, with an anvil, charcoal basket, pines, a temple and a pagoda behind.

Old Master Zhang was a man of Shanxi. His daughter was soon to be married, so he took his family south of the Yangtze to buy her trousseau himself. When the boat reached Mount Jin, Zhang crossed the river first, telling his household to stay on board and not to fry anything rank, meat or fish. For there was a monster turtle in the river that came up whenever it smelled cooking; it wrecked boats and swallowed travellers, and had done so for a long time. Once Zhang was gone, the household forgot, and roasted meat on the boat. Suddenly a huge wave overturned it, and his wife and daughter both drowned. Zhang rowed back, so stricken with grief and rage that he wished to die. He went up Mount Jin to see the monks of the temple and asked them about the turtle, meaning to take revenge on it. The monks were aghast. “We live beside it every day,” they said, “and for fear it will bring disaster on us we can only worship it as a god and pray it will not grow angry. From time to time we slaughter an animal and throw in half the carcass, and it leaps up, swallows it and goes away. Who could ever take revenge on it?” When Zhang heard this, a plan came to him at once. He sent for ironworkers, set up a furnace halfway up the mountain, and heated a lump of iron weighing over a hundred jin until it glowed red. Having found out where the turtle usually lay, he had two or three strong men lift the iron with great tongs and throw it in. The turtle leapt out and gulped it down. Soon the waves rose like mountains. In a moment they subsided, and the turtle was floating dead on the water. Travellers and monks alike rejoiced. They built a shrine to Old Master Zhang with his likeness inside and made him a god of the waters; whoever prays to him is answered.
