Dragons

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in daytime outside the narrow gate of a village gentleman's house, a mud-smeared dragon lies coiled in a shallow rain pool with its head raised and flies above its back, while a bearded scholar in a square cap, a manservant holding an upright matchlock gun and a small boy with two top-knots lean over the upper veranda railing and stare down in astonishment, with a bare tree and thatched roofs behind a low wall.

In Northern Zhili a dragon fell from the sky into a village. It moved heavily and clumsily. It went into the house of a certain gentleman; the doorway was barely wide enough for its body, and it squeezed its way in. The whole household fled. They climbed into the upper storey, shouting and clamouring, and fired off their guns with a great roar. At this the dragon came out. Outside the gate stood a pool of rainwater, less than a foot deep. The dragon got into it and rolled from side to side until its whole body was smeared with mud. It strained with all its might to leap up, but every time it rose a foot or so it fell back. For three days it lay coiled in the mud, and flies gathered on its scales. Then suddenly a great rain came down, and with a clap of thunder it clawed its way into the sky and was gone.

A scholar named Fang climbed Mount Niu with some friends and went into a temple to look around. Suddenly a yellow brick dropped from among the rafters. On it lay coiled a little snake, no thicker than an earthworm. All at once it turned about once, and was as thick as a finger; it turned once more, and was already as broad as a sash. They were all alarmed. Knowing it for a dragon, they hurried down the hill together. They had got only halfway when they heard a clap of thunder from the temple that shook the hills and valleys. Black clouds hung over the sky like a canopy, and in them a huge dragon writhed and twisted. After a while it vanished.

At Xiaoxianggong Village in Zhangqiu, a peasant woman was going out into the fields when a great wind blew up and dashed dust and sand in her face. She felt something in one eye, as if a wheat awn were caught there. She rubbed it and blew on it, but it never got better. When the lid was held open and the eye looked at closely, the eyeball itself was unharmed, but a red thread wound its way through the flesh. Someone said, “That is a dragon lying dormant.” The woman, sick with fear, waited to die. More than three months later there was a violent storm. Suddenly, with a great clap of thunder, the thing split the corner of her eye and was gone. The woman was not harmed in the least.

Yuan Xuansi said: “When I was in Suzhou, one dark, overcast day there was a great burst of thunder. Everyone saw a dragon hanging down from the edge of the clouds, its scales bristling and stirring. In its claws it clutched a man’s head, the beard and eyebrows plain to see. After a while it went up into the clouds and vanished. Yet no one ever heard of anyone losing his head.”
