A colour woodblock-style frontispiece: on a moonlit night over a walled garrison city, the swordswoman Nie Yinniang in black, with a blue scarf streaming behind her and a short dagger in her hand, leaps across the rooftops; below her, in the shadow of the city wall, the maidservant Hong Xian glances back with a small gold box clutched to her chest and a trail of mist behind her; on the roof of the gate tower the burly, curly-bearded stranger stands alone in a wind-blown fur-trimmed coat, one hand on his sword, gazing far away.

About the text

Chinese text from Taiping Guangji · Chinese Wikisource. Chinese originals from volumes 193–195, in traditional characters. The volume pages do not identify a printed base edition. Retrieval: 8 October 2026. Local source archives retain the page text; documented corrections apply only to the reader text. The stories are public-domain Chinese fiction; no modern translation is used.

We put these three stories together for this library; no old anthology goes by this title. All three appear in the swordsmen sections of Taiping Guangji, volumes 193–195, and each can be read on its own.

Nie Yinniang is trained by a nun and sent to kill a military governor. Hongxian enters a rival commander’s bedroom and takes a golden box without killing anyone. The Curly-Bearded Stranger meets Li Jing and Hongfu, then gives up his ambitions in China after seeing the future Tang emperor.

The traditional credits are Pei Xing for Nie Yinniang, Yuan Jiao for Hongxian and Du Guangting for the Curly-Bearded Stranger. The last is disputed; Taiping Guangji names its source as Qiuran zhuan without naming an author. We give these credits as tradition gives them, not as settled authorship.
